Male Cosmetic / Aesthetic Surgery

With the popularity of cosmetic plastic surgery increasing, the stigma of male cosmetic surgery has faded. Many of Dr. Baker’s cosmetic patients are men. In fact, one of his patients was even featured in an article by the Washington Post on the increasing trends of men undergoing cosmetic surgery.

Procedures that are commonly performed in this group of men are eyelifts, neck lifts, and facelifts. Most men do not want to look much younger than they are. They are seeking to look their age, but look great for their age. This involves removing the loose skin under the neck, reducing the heavy upper eyelids, or removing the puffiness under the lower eyelids. Dr. Baker will work with each patient to meet his goals and achieve a result that reduces the stigmata of aging yet retains each man’s masculine appearance and avoiding a “done” look.

Some men have a desire to enhance the masculinity of their facial shape. A strong male face has a chiseled angularity with a strong chin. In men who lack but desire these features, chin, jaw, or cheek implants are a consideration to accentuate male facial features. In chin surgery, the bone can actually be moved rather than using an implant. Moving the chin forward has a more powerful tightening effect on the soft tissues under the chin and around the mouth when compared to an implant.

Plastic surgery procedures in men are not limited to the face. Many men work out and are successful in losing unwanted fat. Some may have persistent areas of fat despite working out and liposuction is a reliable method to remove these undesirable fat deposits. Some men may be so successful shedding pounds that they are now left with loose skin. In these patients, procedures can be performed to restore confidence in a swimsuit. Male breast prominence occurs in puberty and older age. This condition is called gynecomastia and can be corrected with surgery as well.

Occasionally, men may benefit from nonsurgical treatments as well. A common indication for Botox is to relax the “angry furrow” that is present in some men even in a peaceful resting posture. Many men do not even realize that they have this look, and it is their wives that send them in for treatment. Also, subtle application of filers can soften deep creases or jowls that present as we age.

Dr. Baker discusses cosmetic surgery in men from an article on the topic in the Washington Post.
